JW & J Mettam Ltd of Bakewell was established in 1899 by the two Mettam brothers.

J.W. & J. Mettam was established in 1899 by the two Mettam brothers. However J.W. Mettam left the firm and became a Methodist Minister in America where he remained for the rest of his life.

J. Mettam (Jim) carried on the business as shop fitters, joiners, timber merchants and undertakers. He also taught woodwork part time at both Lady Manners and St Anselm’s schools in Bakewell.

Jim was joined by his two sons Jack and Bill. they continued to develop the business and expanded both the funeral and woodwork side of the company. Ron Price was for many years the funeral director at Mettams. He joined the firm in 1937 and retired in 2000, a tremendous 63 years of loyal service. Ron sadly passed away in 2014.

The Jepson family acquired the business in 1981 and it moved to its new premises in Granby Croft in 2007 which were officially opened by the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire. Andrew Godfrey is the Funeral Director and is assisted by Hannah Johnson.
